As a historian of the 19th and 20th centuries Alexa Geisthoevel has worked on a variety of topics, such as Vormaerz nationalism, monarchical representation, race psychology in the first half of the 20th century and pop culture.

She has been a member of the Bielefeld-based Collaborative Research Center „The Political as Communicative Space in History“ (SFB „Das Politische als Kommunikationsraum in der Geschichte“) and the German Research Foundation Priority Program „Science, Politics and Society“ (DFG-Schwerpunktprogramm „Wissenschaft, Politik und Gesellschaft. Deutschland im internationalen Zusammenhang im späten 19. und im 20. Jahrhundert“), located at Berlin Humboldt University.

Since 2012 she is part of the ERC resaerch program working on “subjects on paper”.
